What is Guard tour?
A guard tour is a defined patrol route with fixed checkpoints that a security guard walks on a set schedule, recorded so the company can prove each checkpoint was physically visited at the required time.
Also called: guard tour system, patrol tour, watchman tour, rounds.
How does a guard tour work?
The site is divided into checkpoints: a loading dock, a stairwell, a roof access door, a server room. The guard walks the route and registers at each checkpoint, producing a timestamped trail showing the route was covered in the required order and at the required interval.
Older systems used a mechanical clock and metal keys mounted at each station. Most operations now use NFC tags, QR codes, or GPS on the guard's phone, which removes the separate hardware and makes the record available immediately instead of when the device is docked.
Why are guard tours audited so closely?
Tours are the easiest part of guarding to fake and the easiest to verify. A guard who stays in the lobby all night can write a plausible DAR, but cannot produce checkpoint scans from the roof. That is why tour data is often the first thing a client asks for when they suspect a site is not being covered, and why insurers and fire authorities may require it outright.
