What is BOLO?
BOLO stands for "be on the lookout", a short alert circulated to guards describing a specific person, vehicle, or behaviour to watch for, along with what to do if it is seen.
Also called: be on the lookout, BOLO alert.
What goes in a BOLO?
- A specific, factual description: clothing, vehicle make and plate, direction of travel
- Why the subject is of interest, stated as observed behaviour
- Exactly what the guard should do: observe and report, deny access, or call police
- What the guard should not do, which is usually to observe and report rather than approach or detain
- An expiry, so stale BOLOs stop circulating
