What is Lone worker?
A lone worker is an employee who works without direct supervision or nearby colleagues, which is the normal condition for most security guards and the reason welfare-check and duress procedures exist in guarding contracts.
Also called: lone working, solo guard.
Why is lone working a specific risk category?
If a lone guard is injured, assaulted, or taken ill, nobody is present to notice or call for help. The risk is not only the event itself but the time that passes before anyone realises something is wrong, which on an overnight shift can be hours.
That is why guarding operations build in a positive-confirmation rhythm: scheduled check-ins the guard must actively respond to, so silence itself becomes the alarm.
